| Common Acne Myths and Effective Acne Treatment |

| Bad diet, bad hygiene, too little or too much sex, chocolate. The list goes on and on. The list of common myths about why people get acne, that is. So let's separate fact from fiction, and see what really plays a part in clear, healthy skin, what can cause acne vulgaris, and what really has no bearing whatsoever on the clarity, health, and acne freedom your skin happens to enjoy. Skin care experts dismiss many of these common misconceptions above as just that - myths about how you get acne, and how can subsequently get rid of it. Keep in mind, while some of them do have some truth to them - for example, hygiene and diet may be contributing factors to your acne, but they are not the end all, be all and the answer to complete acne treatment and eradication. A comprehensive treatment system is needed, which addresses the hormonal imbalance internally, as well as clearing the pores externally for healthy, clear and smooth skin on the outside. 1. Acne is not directly caused only by poor hygiene or neglect in one's skin care. Some believe that acne is caused by bad hygiene habits, and they tend to over wash and hence over-dry and irritate their skin. Washing your skin too often, or too vigorously results in a breakdown of your skin's natural protective barrier, which believe it or not, protects our skin from acne breakouts and the environmental factors that destroy our skin systematically, such as the sun, wind, and other toxins that can enter our skin and create free radicals, skin's number one enemy. Not only that, over washing one's skin tends to have the reverse effects of what one would think - it actually causes your skin to produce more pore-clogging oils which lead to more whiteheads, blackheads, and acne bumps. 2. Myth number 2 is that acne can be solely caused by eating some foods such as chocolate. While it is true that your skin tends to reflect the way you eat, it is not true that if you eat all the right foods your skin will magically clear up if you have tendencies toward hormonal acne. I remember I used to eat as healthy as I could, boning up on my fruits and veggies, in my early teens, and my skin still broke out tremendously. Diet can definitely help you with your skin, but many times the issues go deeper than diet, and need to be addressed by using corrective acne products. 3. Some say it is a myth that stress can cause acne. I disagree. I know that stress causes me to break out. therefore, avoid stress as much as you can. Take enjoyment in relaxing things like yoga and long walks, or even meditation to eliminate most stress from your day. Your skin will benefit from this, as well as your mental state. 4. Acne shouldn't affect the way people view you, or your self esteem. Wrong! Studies have been done showing the adults or even teens with acne are viewed differently by others. As unfair as it is, our skin represents us, and some people may not take those with acne as seriously, or form preconceived notions about them because of their outward appearance. Acne does affect you in other areas of your life, it's not just a personal self esteem issue. 5. Makeup doesn't cause acne. This is not true. Some of the heavier and oilier foundations can cause pores to clog. Be sure to look for the word "noncomedogenic" which means it is not pore clogging, and is ideal for people with skin that is prone to breaking out, or even with serious acne. 6. A very common myth, and one I unfortunately fell victim to in my teens is that the sun will help your acne clear up. While it is true that the sun has drying effects on acne lesions, and may temporarily clear up your acne and make it look better since it is tan and doesn't stand out as much, research has shown that sun exposure actually makes your acne worse in the long run, so still stay out of the sun, and use a noncomedogenic sun block on your face. The last thing you want is a sunburn. |
