  • Mineral Cosmetics : Are Liquid Foundations on Their Way Out?

Mineral cosmetics in the form of mineral foundations and eyeshadows are gaining a lot popularity right now, especially two brands, Bare Escentuals and Bare Minerals, although Bare Minerals seems to be winning the popularity contest right now. I believe these two may be related though, because they are cross promoted on their websites.

The following is a review of mineral makeups and foundations in general, although I'd like to make it clear that the only people I know that have reported rave reviews on these actually use Bare Minerals. This does not mean there are not other excellent all natural products out there, but these are in my realm of experience.

Now that mineral cosmetics have caught on like wildfire though as the more "natural" alternative that's "good for your skin", there are a lot of spinoffs and copycats to these types of formulas. So why are these higher end, mineral-based cosmetics getting so much attention, and why are women shunning their liquid and creme foundations to try these lightweight makeups?

The women I've talked to that use mineral makeup say that they had doubts about the amount of coverage and the natural look that this type of "minimalist" foundation could provide for their face, especially since it looks like it wouldn't really do much at all in the way of covering blemishes and imperfections, like our treasured liquid foundations and cover ups.

But, once they tried it and the makeup set in, they said their skin took on a flawless look that was natural and sheer, and not too overbearing. They also rave about the way the color blends with their skin, looking as if it just belongs there. The key to getting the right color is making sure you are able to test it out on your face before you buy.

Makeup gurus like Sephora and department store counters that sell this type of foundation will be more than happy to allow you to take different shades for a test run and see what color looks the best, provides the most coverage, and is most complementary to your skin tone.

Let's go over the benefits of mineral foundations and makeup. Keep in mind, these pluses may not apply to all brands, but several of them offer these types of benefits and features.

    Benefits of Mineral Cosmetics :

    1. They're made from 100% pure, noncomedogenic minerals.
    2. They usually have an SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 or higher, to provide superior sun protection and fend off early aging and further photodamage.
    3. Most formulas contain no preservatives.
    4. Most formulas are fragrance free, which means reduced possibility of allergy.
    5. They generally contain no oils or talc. Talc has been implicated as a cancer causing agent, although there may not be any conclusive evidence yet. Oils and talcs can also clog pores.

Mineral makeup : The Verdict and Final Review

Most women who use these mineral cosmetics seem to say the same things such as "my complexion has never looked better", "easy to apply and long wearing", "blends away imperfections", "complementary to my skin tone", "the most natural feeling and looking makeup I've every used..." and more. So, since I have not heard a bad review about these mineral foundations or makeup, I would say it's a good bet that if you try it, you're gonna love it!
